What I hope to achieve in life:
- Research: https://engineeringjoy.com/2013/04/19/graduate-school-research-interests/
- Continue working with Society of Women Engineers to support women in technical careers
- Work to increase the accessibility of technical education in underrepresented communities through free, open source resources like online tutorials, lectures, and textbooks
Background:
- Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico
- Attended Gilroy High School, Gilroy, CA
- Mixed heritage; proud of hispanic (Mexican/Native American/Spanish) roots
- Lover of food, arts, literature, nature, and philosophy
- Hobbies include rock climbing, running, cycling, gardening, and learning about new cultures
- For the recent honor of being featured on the 2013 SJSU Honors Convocation website, I wrote a genuine, candid synopsis of who I am, where I came from, and the challenges I’ve faced. Transparency is sometimes difficult, but is incredibly necessary in the effort to lift up others who may have similar experiences. I share my own story in the hopes that it will inspire others to face struggles head on and with confidence: http://www.sjsu.edu/provost/events/honors/featured/2013/joy_franco/
Quote which best describes me:
- “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” – Henry David Thoreau
